A More Perfect Union

Many on the Right miss the noble beauty of what our Founding Fathers established when they wrote the Constitution. We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. Having just survived Shay's Rebellion, they knew how important it was to promote the general welfare of all of our citizens if we were to distinguish ourselves from the tyrants of the present and the past. It is not muddle-headed philanthrapy to provide social programs to protect those in a society who cannot care for themselves. It is good policy to insure domestic tranquility. The sad rallying cry of the Republican Party right now is a solid committment to preventing Democrats from raising taxes on the billionaires while screaming to cut safety net programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. History is packed with example, after bloody example, of societies which have had a small group who controlled all wealth while the masses were oppressed. Praise God, that in the United States of America, no child has to go to bed hungry at night huddled frightened in a box on the street, nor any elderly American is forced to live off the trash heaps for their meals. In America, because of federal financial aid, a poor child in Ameirca, who has survived the most hideous abuse or neglect imaginable can pull themselves out of the muck and mire of horrid conditions by earning an education.

Are we not greater whenever we stoop to lift those who have fallen? Are we not blessed as a nation because of the institutional charity we provide our downtrodden brothers and sisters? I think we are. I believe in the United States of America who stands behind those sad words inscribed at the base of Lady Liberty, "Give us your poor, your tired, your huddled masses yearning to breath free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" America is the last, best hope for those who have for too long lived beside the road of history. We can all pray that the zealous members of the Tea Party do no permanent damage to our society before the citizens of this great nation has the opportunity to remove them from office and send them back to the insane asylums from which they came. God bless America!
